                                                       Early Achievers

Since July of 2012, Puyallup Playcare Center has been participating in the Early Achievers Program sponsored by the Department of Early Learning and the Race to the Top Grant  which is a 60 million grant received by the State of Washington to improve early learning in Washington State.

Since our participation began we have been making improvements to classroom environments and increasing the level of adult/child interactions.  Some of the physical changes that we have made are moving all child cubbies into classrooms rather than in the hallway; evaluated and, in some cases, updated the learning centers in each classroom based on the Early Childhood Rating Scale (ECRS).  We have purchased and implemented the assessment software Teaching Strategies Gold that tracks the developmental milestones of preschoolers based on documentation entered by classroom teachers.  Preschool lead and assistant teachers have participated in many hours of training.

In December of 2013 we received our initial rating and received a rating of Level 3.  As a result we have received $5,000 per year for the past three years to purchase equipment, learning materials and provide professional development for staff.

We are now preparing for our second rating in the Fall of 2017 when we hope to reach a Level 4 as a result of our work with Teaching Strategies Gold to document the growth and development of our preschool children.  When we reach Level 4, we will then receive $7,000 per year to devote to improved learning for our preschool and to supplement our professional development program for preschool staff members.
